THE TRAVELER
We must begin in harbor.
Safe.
Still.
Content in discontent.
~
We cultivate castles of comfort.
Gilding the edges of our cells.
Fortifying chains,
The reasons we stay.
~
But then we’re beckoned forth.
~
Our souls squirm within
restrains we’ve set.
In the space of silence,
We hear the call to more. Beyond.
~
Fear answers.
Unseen, indistinct, below.
Before we know,
We’re pulled back under.
~
Half-baked dreams left strewn.
Abandoned treasure.
Nothing lost. Nothing risked.
Nothing ventured.
~
But for a few,
A very fortunate few,
‘safe’
is not enough.
~
They’d rather risk their flesh,
and vent their pain on tempest seas.
Steel their worth against travails
and face their dark and stormy night.
~
Look into the maw and stake their life
against a greater danger than death.
To find, at the end, life was left on distant shores,
Which never touched our eyes.
